Bible reading
HEALTHY HABITS FOR READING THE BIBLE
1. Commit to praying through the Scripture that you read each day.
Sometimes, our reading can become mechanical. One of the best ways to combat this is to pray using the Scripture passage that you read for the day. This helps us connect to the Scripture by seeking out themes and specific verses within the Scripture. Then in prayer, we ask the Holy Spirit to teach us more and to apply the Scripture to our lives.
2. Make memorization a regular activity.
Many people don’t memorize Scripture because it is difficult. However, wrestling with Scripture during the process of memorization is healthy and helpful. Instead of picking random verses or passages to memorize, choose texts from your daily reading that the Holy Spirit has emphasized or that you have prayed through.
3. Make an effort to remember what you are reading.
As you read through a book of the Bible, it can be easy to forget what you read in the previous days. Remembering your previous reading will add context to your current reading and help you see the larger picture of the Bible. Before reading for the day, try to summarize yesterday’s reading in a few short sentences. As you improve, begin to summarize larger portions.
